09/24/07   The St. Petersburg City Council Pays a Visit to Eckerd College

This past Tuesday, September 18th, members of St. Petersburg’s City Council visited the campus of Eckerd College located at 4200 54th Avenue South. Eckerd College President Donald R. Eastman III hosted the council on Eckerd’s beautiful waterfront campus. Joining the President  to discuss the economic development impact of the College's programs, faculty, staff, and students on our community was Dr. Norm Smith, Director of Eckerd College's Center for Applied Liberal Arts (CALA); Dr. James E. Deegan, Vice President and Dean of Special Programs; Ms. Alizza Punzalan-Hall, Director of Community and Media Relations; Mr. Bill McKenna, Director of Development, Planning and New Construction; and Dr. Lisa A. Mets, Executive Assistant to the President, Executive Director of Communications, and Director of Emergency Management.

Eckerd College is the only designated “national liberal arts” college in Florida. It has a full-time undergraduate enrollment of 1,750 students representing forty-eight states and forty-five foreign countries. In 2003, Eckerd College became one of only 270 colleges to be awarded a Phi Beta Kappa chapter in the society's 226-year history.

Eckerd is home to some unique programs and opportunities for both students and the community. These programs include among others, the Program for Experienced Learners; the Leadership Development Institute; the Eckerd College Search and Rescue Team (EC-SAR), whose team of student volunteers assists over 300 vessels each year on the Tampa Bay waterways; and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

A brief tour of the campus highlighted some of the exciting new developments taking place there, including the state of the art Peter H. Armacost Library as well as the new Iota Residential Complex, the first complex on Eckerd’s campus to achieve LEED (U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) new building certification for sustainable development.

One of Eckerd’s community outreach programs highlighted by Dr. Smith during the visit is Eckerd College’s internship program with the St. Petersburg Business Assistance Center. This program partners Eckerd students with developing Midtown area businesses. These partnerships provide the businesses with assistance and support while affording the Eckerd students invaluable experience in a real world business situation.
