7/3/06 St. Petersburg Seeks Vendors
for WiFi Network
The City of St. Petersburg announced recently that it
has released a Request for Proposal (RFP) to solicit vendors interested in
creating a wireless network throughout the city.
"The goal of the RFP is to create a seamless,
reliable, secure and affordable wireless broadband network providing access
to residents, businesses, educational institutions and visitors within the
city," said Chief Information Officer Muslim Gadiwalla.
A year ago, Mayor Rick Baker assembled a task force to
study the development of a city-wide wireless network. The RFP is the
culmination of that effort. The city is pursuing vendors who can build out
and provide a wireless network extending throughout all geographical
boundaries inside city limits. Responses to the RFP are due to the city's
Purchasing and Materials Management Department by August 16, 2006.
"We have a great opportunity to use technology to
advance the progress of our city," said Mayor Rick Baker. " The
WiFi St. Pete initiative will not only be of great value to our residents,
businesses and visitors, but it will also help the city in delivery of
governmental services, stimulate private investment, and promote job
creation, business growth and economic development," he said.
Interested vendors are invited to review the details of
the RFP and frequently asked questions by visiting www.WiFiStPete.com.
Also, as many other municipalities throughout the United States are working
to create similar networks to what St. Petersburg is pursuing through the
RFP, the city invites members of the city's business, non-profit and
educational communities to post letters of support for the WiFi initiative
on the site.
