06/25/07   Third Time Is a Charm for Beauty Returning to a Beautiful Place

This week the City of St. Petersburg is pleased to welcome back for a third time the “72nd Miss Florida Pageant”. The pageant is being held in the beautifully restored Mahaffey Theater at the Progress Energy Center for the Arts.

This week long event is expected to be filled with tons of sunsational fun, meet and greet moments throughout our community, a Devil Rays game, and ends with the crowning of Miss Florida 2007 who will go on to compete in the Miss America pageant at the end of the year.

“St. Petersburg is honored to be the home of the Miss Florida Pageant,” said Mayor Rick Baker. “As a community that invests in its young people and future leaders, St. Petersburg and the Miss Florida Pageant share in our commitment to education and excellence.”

The Miss America Organization is one of the nation’s leading achievement programs and the world’s largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Since 2002, over $200,000 in scholarships have been awarded through the Miss Florida Organization to contestants that have competed in the Miss Florida program.

The pageant committee selected St. Petersburg as the host location for its premier event due to our central location which is anticipated to attract a record audience for the 2007 event. Mary Sullivan, President and Executive Director of the Miss Florida Scholarship Pageant stated “St. Petersburg is the perfect city to host the Miss Florida Pageant and we are excited to return home for the 2007 pageant.”

Lastly, don’t miss our historical tourist attraction “The Pier” that welcomes approximately 1.8 million visitors per year. Welcome to beautiful St. Petersburg!

The pageant’s theme is Dreamgirls and the schedule of events is as follows:

June 24 – Miss Florida Day at Tropicana Field: The Miss Florida contestants will join the Devil Rays as they play the Dodgers. Contestants will meet and greet the public at 12:30 pm and take center field with the players before the opening pitch.

June 27 thru 29 – Miss Florida Pageant Preliminary Competition: contestants will compete in Talent, Swimsuit, Evening Wear and On Stage Question segments.  The event begins at 7:30pm at the Mahaffey Theater.

June 30 – Miss Florida Pageant Final Competition: The pageant's Top Ten Contestants will complete in the final judged elimination round, ending with the crowing of Miss Florida 2007. The event begins at 7:30pm at the Mahaffey Theater.

June 30 – Miss Florida 2007 Gala Event: This closing program event will be held at the Coliseum directly following the Miss Florida Pageant Final Competition event held at the Mahaffey Theater. The newly crowned Miss Florida 2007 will join Miss America 2007 Lauren Nelson, Fashion Designer Kayne Gillaspie and Miss Florida 2006 Allison Kreiger to celebrate the week long event of the Miss Florida Pageant.
