5/8/06 Florida Teacher Summer Internship
Program
In collaboration with the Florida
Department of Education, the National Collegiate Technology Association,
and the Florida IT Executive Council, the Florida IT Centers of Excellence
are launching a new statewide business and technology summer internship
program for Florida teachers supporting all
technology sectors.
The Florida Teacher Summer
Internship Program provides
opportunities for educators and employers to create and strengthen business
and academic partnerships, provide a “hands-on learning” experience for Florida teachers, and support Florida
Department of Education learning goals for teachers and students. Six-week
paid internship opportunities provide teachers with professional
development pathways to become part of the local business community and to
gain a better understanding of the realities of the workplace. Teachers are
exposed to and are provided with a fascinating look into current and future
business practices and operations, how business and technology are
integrated, what qualifications and education requirements employers are
looking for when hiring, and insight into trends and business forecasts for
different businesses and industry sectors.
Program results support and
encourage positive changes in both content and teaching methods which will
provide improved academic experiences for students – Florida’s future workforce. Teachers
complete their internships by adapting what they have learned to classroom
projects and curriculum development. Program performance will be measured
for each program year.
Florida businesses, industries and
government organizations are always looking for skilled employees. New
employees need math and science skills for the jobs and careers of today
and tomorrow. The rapid development and emergence of new technologies
rapidly facilitates major changes in the workplace which in turn demands
that students must continually develop their skills to utilize
technological innovations in the workplace and community. Many teachers
have spent little time in jobs outside of academic circles, yet they play a
critical role in teaching and advising young people about the importance of
specific skills and how they apply to life outside of schools, including
mastery of reading, math, science, writing, foundational technology skills,
soft skills (critical thinking, problem solving, communication, teamwork,
etc.).
At the state and national level,
government agencies have joined together with teachers to establish goals,
revise curriculum and develop assessment strategies consistent with the
future needs of government, business and industry. To be successful,
business and industry must also join and actively participate.
