4/24/06 Fiscal Year-to-date Permitted Construction Eclipses $360-million
You might have guessed it from the sightings
of construction cranes and hard hats around town, but the building boom in St. Petersburg shows no sign of
waning. In the 2006 fiscal year-to-date (October 2005 – March 2006),
permitted construction within the city limits totaled $368,929,104, well on
pace to break last fiscal year’s record tally of $412-million.
These projects contributed to the $62-million
permitted in March: The Sage condominiums and several new buildings at Eckerd College. The Sage is a
112-residence development at the corner of 4th Street and 5th
Avenue S. Tower units will offer views of Tampa Bay as well as downtown
St.
Petersburg. Eckerd College, the nationally-recognized liberal arts college located on
St. Petersburg’s southern waterfront, is in the midst of a expansion that
will provide several new – and enhance existing – campus amenities for its
1600 students.
Other major projects contributing to the
fiscal year-to-date total include 400 Beach Drive, Progress Energy’s new office tower, Echelon Point, and
1010 Central. December 2005 set a record
for permitted value in St. Petersburg, $139,182,897, more than doubling the previous monthly record of
$63,167,406 set in December 1998.
While the vast majority of development is inherently a
private market transaction, the city facilitates all phases of development
in St. Petersburg, providing construction and development review services,
as well as maintenance of zoning and historic preservation programs. Forms
and applications are available from the Development Services website (www.stpete.org/devserv.htm)
and to remove even more red tape, the city processes several aspects of
permitting and inspection online, negating the need for a visit to the Municipal Services Center.
St. Petersburg continues to shine
as a great place to live, work, and play!
