02/12/07 Wednesday Mid- Day Market Shining Success
Sunny skies and warm weather brought office dwellers,
downtown residents, and local vendors out to enjoy the first Wednesday
Mid-Day Market on February 7th, in downtown St. Petersburg’s Williams Park.
Organizers estimate that more than 1000 patrons and 25 vendors were on-hand
for this event, which will run weekly from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each
Wednesday.
The new endeavor, sponsored by the city, the St.
Petersburg Downtown Partnership, Progress Energy and St. Petersburg College, marks the return of an open-air market to Williams Park, where the popular Saturday
Morning Market was originated 10 years ago. The Saturday Morning Market,
now held on Central Ave., draws nearly 5,000 shoppers each week.
“The Wednesday
Midday Market offers a great lunch alternative for downtown’s business
community, and it provides a new economic opportunity for small business
vendors in the heart of downtown,” said Don Shea, president, St. Petersburg
Downtown Partnership. The market is also a new sign of vitality in the
Williams Park area of downtown, where a new Progress Energy headquarters
opened earlier this year and St. Petersburg College announced plans for an
expanded downtown campus and arts complex, including offices for Florida
Orchestra and a new American Stage Theater.
This Wednesday, why not celebrate Valentine's Day by
stopping by the market and picking up something sweet? At the same time,
enjoy live entertainment by the Celtic group Empty Hats, great food, plants
and flowers, arts and crafts. For more information about the Wednesday or
Saturday Morning Markets, please call David Cellon, market manager, at
