1/09/07 What to Watch For in 2007
With
2006 in the books, we can now look ahead to several exciting events – some
returning and some brand new – slated for St. Petersburg in 2007!
Can you
call it Winter if the temperature is in the 70s? The early
part of the New Year will be marked by the continued vertical construction
of 400 Beach and also that of Signature Place. These magnificent
developments will add to the ever-growing renaissance of St. Petersburg’s
downtown. For a map and list of current downtown developments, make
sure to visit the “Area Maps” section of our website, www.StPeteShines.com.
Springtime in St. Petersburg for the
sports fan cannot be beat. The Devil Rays’ pitchers and
catchers report February 16,
joined by position players on the 21st. A full schedule of Spring
Training games follows in March at the waterfront Progress Energy Park – Home of Al Lang Field. Mark your calendars for the Rays’ Tropicana Field
home opener, April 6 versus the Toronto Blue Jays. For the racing
enthusiast, the 2007 Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg roars through
the downtown streets March 30-April 1. This year, Sunday’s IndyCar
Series race is preceded by the inaugural American Le Mans Series’ ALMS
St. Pete event.
Summertime’s
long days provide plenty of time for a variety of outdoor events, such as St. Petersburg’s Independence Day Celebration and a host of others. There are
plenty of ways to beat the heat, however. Wander through serene waterfront
parks, visit the expanding Museum of Fine Arts, the
soon-to-be relocated Dalí Museum, and others, and enjoy fine
dining at one of downtown’s sidewalk cafés.
Autumn
is back-to-school time. St. Petersburg schools offer rigorous and
relevant learning environments, in part due to the support of the local
business community through the Mayor’s Mentors & More program. Higher
educational opportunities also abound at St. Petersburg College, the University of South Florida-St. Petersburg, and Eckerd College.
These
events and others are just part of the reason St. Petersburg Shines – we’ll
see you throughout the year!
