1/22/07 New Partnerships Strengthen St. Petersburg Arts Offerings
Mayor Rick Baker announced recently a visionary new plan
for an arts complex on downtown’s St. Petersburg College (SPC) campus near
Williams Park that will provide a home for Florida Orchestra’s headquarters
and new theater space for St. Petersburg’s acclaimed American Stage
Theater. The announcement also includes plans for SPC to assume ownership
and management of the Palladium Theater.
The agreement among SPC, the Florida Orchestra, American
Stage, and the Palladium Theater consolidates private funds and matching
state grants to build a new multi-story complex on SPC’s property at the
corner of Second Ave. N. and Third St.
The Palladium Theater – a historic 880-seat venue also
in downtown St. Petersburg – will also be enhanced, continuing on its core
mission to provide a community arts venue as well as additional SPC
programs and an alternate rehearsal space for the Florida Orchestra.
“This
is a win-win-win-win-win situation for four organizations that are a
critical component to St. Petersburg’s rising prominence as a cultural
leader in the southeast,” said Mayor Rick Baker. “American Stage can
continue to grow with a larger, state-of-the-art theater; the Florida
Orchestra will be at home in new headquarters; the Palladium will see
improvements and additional programming; and SPC can expand its curriculum
in the performing arts through partnerships with these and other quality
institutions.”
