12/25/06 – Update on Albert Whitted Municipal Airport
Albert Whitted Muncipal Airport (FAA code: SPG), downtown St. Petersburg’s
waterfront general aviation airport, has been a hotbed of activity the last
few months with the construction of the new Intermodal General Aviation
Center (IGAC), as well as the Hangar rehabilitation project and the helipad
relocation project.
The $4-million IGAC will be approximately 10,600 square
feet, with passenger and pilot lounge areas, restaurant space, and business
offices for a fixed base operator (FBO). The terminal is being built on the
northwest corner of the airport property, at the intersection of First St.
S. and Bayshore Drive, across the street from the future home of the relocated
Salvador Dalí Museum. Earlier this year, the airport issued requests for
proposals for the FBO, retail, and restaurant operations. An evaluation
committee has been formed and will soon issue recommendations for award,
subject to approval by the Mayor and City Council.
Funding for the IGAC consists of $3.2-million in grants
from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). Local philanthropist
and airport enthusiast John Galbraith stepped forward with a $400,000
non-refundable donation toward the city’s match. Mr. Galbraith also
pledged to provide the city with a $3.2 million interest-free loan to allow
construction to commence. Mr. Galbraith will be reimbursed as FDOT grants
funds are released to the city.
Albert Whitted Municipal Airport is owned and operated by the City of St. Petersburg, providing convenient access by air to the city’s downtown waterfront,
business district and urban communities. The Airport is located just
blocks away from hotels, restaurants, museums, shopping and more. The
110-acre facility handles approximately 100,000 general aviation aircraft
operations annually and is the home base to an estimated 200 aircraft. The
airport provides various aviation services including flight training,
aircraft charter and rentals, aircraft and helicopter maintenance, aircraft
detailing, avionics, pilot supplies, banner towing, and sightseeing tours.
