12/18/06 – First Night St. Petersburg
First Night St. Petersburg started in 1993, led by a group of citizens interested in bringing the
event to our community. Today there are over 100 communities
throughout the world that welcome the new year with a First Night. St. Petersburg is one of only three communities in Florida where the community joins with
performing & visual arts groups to celebrate the arts and the new
year.
The 14th Annual New
Year's Eve Celebration of the Arts runs from 2:00 pm December 31, 2006 to
12:30 am January 1, 2007. A total of 33 venues will be showcased this year
between the Midtown and Downtown locations.
MidDay at MidTown kicks off the event from
2:00 to 5:00 pm. Seven venues in this historic area of St. Petersburg
including the St. Petersburg Clay Company, the historic Royal Theater, and
the Carter G. Woodson African-American Museum, showcase jazz, ceramic arts,
puppetry, and other hands-on activities.
At 5:00 pm, the party moves to downtown where activities
at the Arts Center, shuffleboard at the St. Pete Shuffle, performances at
American Stage, concerts throughout the 7-mile waterfront park system, and
other events culminate with the finale fireworks display at the Vinoy
Basin.
Adult tickets are $8 in advance; $10 on event day; $5
for ages 6 to 12; and children under 5 are free. And First Night happens
rain or shine!
