12/12/05 St. Petersburg College Downtown
It had been almost 64 years since SPC had left downtown St. Petersburg for a “suburban” campus near Gibbs High School. In August the college
returned with their own facility and was pleased to be back in downtown.
SPC pulled off a mighty feat when they renovated and constructed the
four-story space a block west of BayWalk. They received City Council
approval in January 2004 to purchase the Mass Brother Annex location and
had the four-story shell completed and the first two floors open for
classes in August 2005.
Approximately half of the first floor will be The
Florida International Museum with the remaining space being the entrance
and SPC classrooms. On the second floor, there will be offices for the
museum, additional classrooms and a student lounge. Floors three and four
are to be built-out in the coming years. The entire project once completed
should cost about $20-million.
Enrollment at the downtown campus is over 1,200 students
and it continues to grow. There is more than 50 staff at the site and
space has been allotted for Corporate Training opportunities.
The Downtown campus is unique in that it offers A.M.
& P.M. Express classes. These classes start at 7:00 am and 5:30 pm
respectively. This allows a student to take classes and work a regular
schedule year round. The early morning and early evening classes meet
twice weekly, have online computer activities and one Saturday morning
session.
Currently this campus offers five degree programs:
Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Associate in Applied Science,
Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Applied Science.
St. Petersburg College Downtown campus’ motto sums it up nicely when
they say “Where class, culture and convenience come together!”
