11/7/05 Midtown Welcomes New Retail

City officials, community members, Sweetbay executives and representatives from Urban Development Solutions and the Sembler Company celebrated the grand opening of Sweetbay Supermarket last week.  The long awaited arrival of a grocery store to the Midtown market was met with great enthusiasm.  Located on the northeast corner of the intersection of 18th Avenue South and 22nd Street, the new, 35,000 square foot Sweetbay supermarket anchors Tangerine Plaza.  The $5.4 million Plaza also includes 11,000 square feet of additional retail space.

For many years, the residents of Midtown told St. Petersburg officials that they needed better access to basic services such as grocery stores, post offices, banks and other retailers. After the recent opening of a post office in Midtown, this project represents another large step forward in the continuing progress of the area.  The city has also recruited Suntrust Bank to the same intersection, with plans to break ground within the next few months.

St. Petersburg will continue to pursue retailers to locate within the Midtown area to be part of its renaissance. There are many exciting opportunities in this underserved and densely populated area.
