11/27/06 – U.S. Geological Survey Hosts Open House in Bayboro District
The U.S. Geological Survey Center for Coastal and
Regional Marine Studies welcomed the public to explore the myriad
activities of their scientists during their free Open House on Nov. 29, at 600 4th St. S., in St. Petersburg’s Bayboro District.
During the Open House, scientists from the USGS and
partner agencies including the Museum of Science and Industry, Weedon
Island Cultural Preserve, Pier Aquarium, Tampa Bay Watch, Florida Fish and
Wildlife Research Institute, the Southwest Florida Water Management
District, and NOAA discussed geology, coastal processes, hurricanes,
tsunamis, coral reefs, native fish and wildlife, sinkholes, streamgage
technology, ground water and much more. More than 40 displays and interactive
exhibits highlighted Tampa Bay and the state of Florida.
St. Petersburg’s Bayboro District is home to several marine science entities such
as the USF College of Marine Science, the USF Center of Ocean Technology,
the Tampa Bay Estuary Program, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission’s Florida Marine Research Institute, the U. S. Coast Guard, and
the Florida Institute of Oceanography. The largest marine science cluster
in the southeast, Bayboro is an example of the diversity and strength of St. Petersburg’s economy.
