11/19/07   NBC’s Today Show Names St. Petersburg This Winter’s “Hot Spot”

NBC’s Today Show travel guru and editor, Peter Greenberg, featured St. Petersburg, Florida as the only U.S. location in his list of “affordable and unique” getaways for the upcoming winter season.

In an article entitled “Beat the Chill (and crowds) with four Hot Winter Trips”, Greenberg advises travelers to skip Central Florida’s “theme park chaos” and head to St. Petersburg instead, lauding not only the area’s favorable temperatures, but cultural offerings like the Salvador Dali Museum and Weedon Island Preserve. Greenburg goes on to further explain that the Dali Museum has earned The Michelin Guide three-star award and it is one of the highest-ranked museums in the entire South.

A nod from Greenberg is exciting news to local tourism officials, as he is perhaps the country’s most influential travel authority. In his choice of noteworthy accommodations, Greenberg selects the historic Dickens House Bed & Breakfast for its “First Night” New Year’s Eve package. Greenburg also notes, St. Petersburg’s First Night is considered to be one of the most successful First Night events in the entire nation. The Dickens House Bed & Breakfast is located in the historic northeast neighborhood of the city, just blocks from the downtown waterfront and offers many amenities.

Greenburg’s Top Four list of “affordable and less crowded” warm winter destination getaways included: Salvador, Brazil; Riviera Maya, Mexico; Mendoza, Argentina; and St. Petersburg, Florida; making our city the only U.S. destination location featured.

DT Minich, Executive Director of Visit St. Pete/Clearwater Visitors Bureau states, “This type of international recognition is a huge compliment and a great way to kick-off the upcoming winter travel season. We’re always happy when someone of his stature shines the travel spotlight on us.”
