10/8/07   Courtyard by Marriott’s Restoration of the Pennsylvania Hotel Earns Historic Preservation Award

The St. Petersburg Preservation Incorporated awarded Courtyard by Marriott its Historic Preservation Excellence Award for the renovation of St. Petersburg’s landmark Pennsylvania Hotel located in the heart of downtown at 300 Fourth Street North. The 1925 hotel was listed on the local register of historic places in 2001, and is a contributing property in the Downtown St. Petersburg National Register District. Courtyard by Marriott restored the historic Pennsylvania Hotel and built an architecturally compatible but modern seven story addition in 2006, while preserving the hotel’s original floors, marbled lobby and breakfast café.

Several participants were on hand during the Historic Preservation Excellence Award honor including: James Bennett, Chairman of St. Petersburg City Council; Ernest Williams, Council Member District 8; David Metz, Deputy Mayor of St. Petersburg; Dr. Will Michaels, President St. Petersburg Preservation Incorporated; John Long, President St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce; and as recipient of the award honor, D’Marie Brennan, General Manager of Courtyard by Marriott.

The former Pennsylvania Hotel, built in 1925 and completed in 1926, was one of ten major hotels built in St. Petersburg during the city’s “golden era” of hotels. It is associated with the development of the tourism industry in St. Petersburg during the 1920’s and was one of the first hotels to offer large guest rooms and elevator service during Florida’s Land Boom. The building is a significant example of the rare Chicago Style architecture that took place in the lodging industry during the 1920’s and 1930’s.

The hotel is situated in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg surrounded by the city’s most prominent business and government offices as well as having close proximity to the city’s finest amenities including Tropicana Field, BayWalk, The Pier, downtown dining and shopping, and the city’s 27+ downtown art galleries and museums.

The next time you visit St. Petersburg, consider making your lodging reservations at this landmark facility now known as Courtyard by Marriott downtown St. Petersburg or one of our other hotel/resort accommodations available downtown.
