10/17/05 Valpak Manufacturing Facility
Breaks Ground in Gateway
On October 7th, city officials, community
members, and representatives of Cox Target Media, Inc. (CTM) celebrated the
groundbreaking of the manufacturing facility for Valpak, the flagship brand
of CTM. Anchoring the La Entrada development, the 470,000 square foot
building will house 10 acres under its roof, large enough to accommodate
seven Boeing 747s! The $200 million project will double the company’s capacity
while adding significant operating efficiencies. The showcase facility’s
equipment and leading-edge technology will support completely new
manufacturing processes.
The Valpak manufacturing facility is being built to
withstand a Category 3 hurricane, and as such brought in more than 4,000
truckloads of fill dirt to raise the base to 18 feet above sea level. To
support the building’s foundation, 1,600 concrete pilings (each 70 feet
long and weighing seven tons) will be driven 50 to 60 feet into the ground
until they anchor into the limestone and bedrock below the site. Once
completed, the building’s warehouse system will stand eight stories high
and be supported by highly automated systems of advanced conveyors and
material movement equipment. Two large printing presses planned for the
building would be a tight fit in a football stadium, as each is about 100
yards long. Five hundred employees will work there – three shifts a day,
seven days a week – when the facility opens in 2007.
La Entrada (Spanish for Gateway) is a 2.6 million square
foot, 122-acre, mixed-use development consisting of 1,000,000 square feet
of office space, 700,000 square feet of manufacturing, 523,000 square feet
of warehousing, 308,000 square feet of commercial, residential, and a
250-room hotel. The project is being developed by Grady Pridgen, Inc.
and is expected to generate 1,800 jobs once completed.
